Two people have been killed and 14 others injured following disturbances during the celebration of the Yam Festival at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.

The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, after the festival programme had ended, according to the Bono Regional Police Command.

Police said the disturbances began around 5:30 p.m. as Nana Tabiri Yaw III and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the palace.

A gunshot was fired during the incident, resulting in multiple casualties.

According to the Police, two people died, while 13 others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Wenchi Divisional Police Command has intensified patrols in Nchiraa to maintain security and has since restored calm to the area.

The Bono Regional Police Command has assured the public that efforts are underway to arrest persons found to have been involved in the disturbances.

Residents have been urged to remain calm as investigations continue.
