The owner of a vehicle in which the bodies of three children were discovered in Tamale has been arrested and taken to Accra to assist with police investigations.

The arrest follows the discovery of the bodies inside the boot of a black Hyundai Tucson at Koblimahagu Zoo in the Tamale Metropolis of the Northern Region.

The children have been identified as Dauda Abdul Aziz, 3; Saani Alsharaf, 5; and Dauda Fadilan, 7.

According to the police, the children left home at about 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026, for Islamic classes but did not return.

Community members searched for them until their bodies were found around 5:00 a.m. on Monday, October 5, inside the vehicle, which was reportedly stuck in mud on a road leading to the area.

Preliminary police checks showed that the vehicle belongs to a member of the Ghana Immigration Service. The owner reportedly told investigators that the vehicle had been stuck in the mud for about five days.

The Inspector-General of Police has deployed a special investigative team comprising homicide investigators, crime scene experts and intelligence officers to support the Northern Regional Police Command.

Police have secured the vehicle for forensic examination and have not yet disclosed the cause of death.

The bodies have also been retained for autopsy despite a request from the families for their release for burial under Islamic customs. Police said the autopsy is necessary to support the investigation and assured the families that the state will bear the cost.
