The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is today, Saturday, October 3, 2026, holding its National Delegates Congress and Officers’ Elections at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, with 7,163 delegates expected to participate.

The conference brings together delegates from across the country to elect new national executives and consider proposed amendments to portions of the party’s constitution.

The congress is being held in two parts, with the constitutional amendment process expected to precede the election of national officers.

13 Constitutional Amendments Proposed

According to a member of the NPP Election Committee, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, 13 constitutional amendments have been proposed for consideration by delegates.

Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tanko on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio, Mr Karbo said the proposals include issues that were not addressed during the party’s previous constitutional amendment conference in Accra in January 2026, as well as new proposals requiring further consideration.

One of the key proposals seeks to change the provision on who should be recognised as the leader of the party.

At the January 31 conference, the NPP introduced a provision stating that the National Chairman shall be the leader of the party at all material times.

However, the latest proposal seeks to amend that provision to designate the party’s flagbearer as the leader of the NPP.

Another proposed amendment concerns the election of Vice Chairpersons.

Under the existing arrangement, all candidates contest the position of National First Vice Chairman, with the first, second and third Vice Chairpersons determined by the number of votes obtained.

Under the proposed system, candidates would instead declare and contest specific Vice Chairperson positions.

Delegates will also be asked to consider a proposal for the appointment of three additional Vice Chairpersons who would not be elected.

Other proposed amendments include the appointment of Deputy Communications Officers and elevating the IT Officer position to an executive position.

Based on the procedure used at the Legon conference, the Chairperson of the Constitutional Amendment Committee, or a representative, is expected to present the motions arising from the proposals before delegates vote by voice.

7,163 Delegates to Vote

The election of national executives is expected to be a major highlight of the congress.

A total of 7,163 delegates are expected to cast their ballots in the various national executive elections.

The Ashanti Region has the highest number of delegates with 1,122, followed by the Greater Accra Region with 773 and the Eastern Region with 732.

The Savannah Region has the lowest number of delegates at 184, followed by the Western North Region with 223.

The voting strength will, however, vary depending on the particular executive position being contested.

According to the figures provided, 2,745 delegates will participate in the Youth Organiser election, while 1,275 will vote in the Women’s Organiser election.

A total of 858 delegates are expected to participate in the election of the NASARA Organiser.

With the constitutional proposals and national executive elections both on the agenda, the Kumasi congress is set to be a major gathering for the NPP as delegates determine the party’s next national leadership structure and consider changes to its governing rules.
