- The club spent £191.7m on players.
Manchester United have borrowed an additional £90 million since June 30, while the club has confirmed that it spent £191.7 million on new players during the summer transfer window.
The latest borrowing has pushed the club’s overall debt above £1 billion, despite cost-cutting measures introduced since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a minority owner in 2024.
United’s summer recruitment included Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Carlos Baleba from Brighton.
The transfer fees announced for the three players totalled £153 million. However, the club’s accounts show total spending of £191.7 million on new players, leaving a difference of almost £39 million. The club has not explained where the additional amount was spent.
Details of the latest borrowing were included in a filing to the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, a day after the club published its accounts for the financial year ending June 30.
The filing showed that United made three additional withdrawals from its revolving credit facility. The club drew £120 million on July 29, July 31 and August 28, before repaying £30 million on September 21.
The transactions resulted in a net increase of £90 million in borrowing since June 30.
Despite efforts to reduce costs, the figures highlight the continued financial pressure facing the club as it funds player recruitment and other operations.
Manchester United have been approached for comment on the additional borrowing and the difference between the reported transfer spending and the fees announced for the three players.
