EOCO says MP ignored two February invitations and remains under investigation

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says its attempted arrest of Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, formed part of lawful measures to secure his attendance in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The clarification follows the circulation of a video on social media showing an altercation between EOCO officers and the MP shortly after he left the Accra High Court.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, EOCO said it had invited Mr Baffour Awuah on two occasions in February 2026 to assist with its investigations, but he did not honour the invitations.
The Office said it subsequently took steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law, describing the attempted arrest on Wednesday as part of those measures.
EOCO stated that its officers were acting within their statutory mandate when they attempted to arrest the MP in connection with the investigation.
Arrest not completed
According to EOCO, the attempted arrest was not completed after the situation escalated and officers determined that continuing with the operation could pose a risk to public safety.
The Office said its officers therefore decided against taking further action at the scene.
EOCO also confirmed that Mr Baffour Awuah subsequently went to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, although Parliament is currently on recess.
The Office said it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities granted to Members of Parliament and would conduct its operations in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws.
EOCO maintains investigation is ongoing
EOCO stressed that membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual outside the reach of the law.
At the same time, the Office said it would not take any action inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or other constitutional protections.
The investigation involving the Manhyia South MP therefore remains active, according to EOCO.
The Office said it would review the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s incident, including available video footage, before deciding on its next course of action.
EOCO reiterated its commitment to carrying out its statutory responsibilities while respecting the Constitution, the rule of law and the institutional privileges of Parliament.
