Police Launch Search for Suspect After Baby Is Stolen at Asafo Market

Panic has gripped traders at the Asafo Market in Kumasi after a five-month-old baby boy was allegedly stolen by an unidentified woman.
The incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the Cape Coast Bus Terminal section of the market, popularly known as the Opera Site.
According to the family, the baby’s mother, 25-year-old Freda Owusu, a food vendor at the market, had taken the child to work with her.
The baby was reportedly sleeping on a bedsheet in front of the family’s store while the mother prepared food for sale.
The mother briefly left the child in the care of her sister, who was nearby, but upon her return, she discovered that both the baby and an unidentified woman who had been sitting close to the store were missing.
The woman, described as dark-complexioned, short and believed to be in her late 30s, is reportedly not known to traders in the area.
Speaking to journalists the baby’s uncle, Osei Kuffour, said the family immediately became alarmed after discovering the child was missing.
He said the baby’s mother and her husband, Emmanuel Acheampong, have since lodged a complaint at the Asokwa Police Station.
The police have launched investigations and a manhunt for the suspect as efforts continue to trace and recover the missing child.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the baby or the suspect is being urged to report to the nearest police station.
