NPP Needs a New General Secretary After 2024 Election Defeat – Boakye Antwi

New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary aspirant Eugene Boakye Antwi says the party needs a change in leadership to rebuild its structures and improve its electoral fortunes ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking with Kwame Tanko on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio, Mr Boakye Antwi said delegates were demanding change, greater recognition and rewards for their contribution to the party.
He argued that the NPP’s history since 1992 shows that General Secretaries who presided over electoral defeats have not been retained.
According to him, former General Secretaries including Ohene Ntow, Dan Botwe, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, and Kwabena Agyepong were all voted out after their respective periods in office, despite some of them overseeing increases in the party’s parliamentary representation.
He said the same precedent should apply to the current General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, following the NPP’s performance in the 2024 elections.
Mr Boakye Antwi claimed that Mr Kodua’s tenure resulted in the NPP losing 50 parliamentary seats and moving from government into opposition. Official election data shows that the NPP won 88 parliamentary seats in 2024, compared with 137 in 2020, while the NDC secured a parliamentary majority.
He described the 2024 election outcome as a failure of organisation, communication, relationships and mobilisation within the party.
He said the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led committee’s report on the election also identified weaknesses within the party, including divisions and indiscipline.
Mr Boakye Antwi further argued that the NPP cannot rely solely on its presidential candidate to win elections, stressing that the strength of the party’s grassroots and parliamentary organisation is critical.
“Bawumia cannot win the election without the party,” he said.
According to him, the General Secretary plays a crucial role in strengthening the party’s structures and coordinating parliamentary elections.
He argued that the NPP’s ability to increase its parliamentary seats is central to its broader electoral success, noting that the presidency comes as a “bonus” when the party performs strongly in parliamentary elections.
Mr Boakye Antwi also cited the NDC’s response after its 2024 victory, arguing that the party refreshed its executive structures despite having won the presidential election.
He maintained that the NPP must similarly examine its structures, communication, mobilisation and relationships with delegates if it wants to rebuild ahead of 2028.
The NPP is scheduled to elect its national officers on October 3, 2026, with Mr Boakye Antwi among the candidates contesting the General Secretary position.
