2026 BECE: About 565,000 Candidates Meet SHS Placement Requirements
CSSPS says about 565,000 out of nearly 620,000 BECE candidates have qualified for placement into Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools.

About 565,000 candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have qualified for placement into Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools, according to the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat.
The figure represents a significant portion of the nearly 620,000 candidates who participated in this year’s examination.
CSSPS Secretariat Coordinator Sherif Sulemana said an analysis by the Ghana Education Service showed that about 565,000 candidates had met the requirements for placement.
“Based on our analysis, we have about 565,000 qualified for placement this year,” he said.
Mr Sulemana explained that a candidate’s eligibility for placement is largely determined by their performance in English Language and Mathematics.
He said candidates who fail either of the two subjects are not eligible for placement.
“Those people have not failed in either English or Mathematics. So, you are disqualified from placement if you have failed in either English or Mathematics,” he explained.
The disclosure comes as education authorities prepare to begin the placement of successful BECE candidates into Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools across the country.
55,000 Candidates Do Not Qualify
According to Mr Sulemana, approximately 55,000 candidates did not meet the minimum requirements for placement.
“There are about 55,000,” he said when asked how many candidates had failed to qualify.
He noted that the examination results showed considerable differences in candidates’ performance, with some recording very low scores in core subjects.
“You find out somebody got one, somebody got ten over 100, somebody got, say, twelve, twenty over 100, and that qualifies as a failure,” he said.
Only 17% Recorded Aggregates 6 to 18
Mr Sulemana also provided further details on the overall performance of candidates.
He said only about 17 per cent of candidates achieved aggregates between 6 and 18, representing approximately 107,000 candidates.
“If you look at the data for the performance of the candidates, we only had about 17 per cent of the candidates getting aggregates from 6 to 18,” he said.
He further disclosed that about 35 per cent of candidates, representing approximately 252,000 students, obtained aggregates ranging from 6 to 24.

With nearly 620,000 candidates having written the 2026 BECE, the figures indicate that about 565,000 candidates are expected to qualify for the SHS placement process, while approximately 55,000 candidates may not qualify under the stated criteria.
