“NDC Is on the Way Back to Opposition; Ghanaians Are Disappointed” – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has declared that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is “on the way going back to opposition,” citing what he describes as growing disappointment among Ghanaians with the Mahama administration.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kwame Tanko, aired on Lawson TV/Radio, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the government’s handling of key national issues has eroded public confidence and created widespread dissatisfaction.

According to him, although it may be difficult to personally rate President John Mahama’s performance, the reaction of Ghanaians provides a clear indication of how the government is being perceived.

“Ghanaians are disappointed,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin argued that the government has failed to deliver on several major campaign promises that helped secure its return to power.

He specifically mentioned the proposed 24-hour economy and the promise of automatic employment for teachers and nurses, questioning the government’s ability to fulfil those commitments.

He further accused the administration of worsening the illegal mining crisis, popularly known as galamsey, despite its pledge to tackle the menace.

The Minority Leader also pointed to increases in utility costs, citing a 30% increase in electricity tariffs and a 19% rise in water tariffs, which he said have added to the difficulties confronting ordinary Ghanaians.

Mr Afenyo-Markin maintained that these developments, coupled with what he described as policy misalignment within government, are contributing to declining confidence in the NDC administration.

He therefore believes the political fortunes of the governing party are changing and that the NDC could soon find itself back in opposition.

“The NDC is on the way going back to opposition. Looking at the rate things are going, there is no faith in the government,” he stated.
