A 28-year-old trader, Monica Ampomah, has been remanded into police custody by the Assin Fosu District Court following allegations that she severely assaulted her 10-year-old daughter with a cutlass during an interrogation over suspected sexual abuse.
Presiding Judge His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu ordered Ampomah to serve a two-week remand and scheduled her next court appearance for September 3, 2026.
Additionally, the court directed that she undergo a psychological evaluation to assess her mental state and determine her fitness to stand trial.
Key Details of the Incident
According to facts presented in court by Prosecutor Inspector Matilda Osaah Buabeng:

Suspicion of Abuse: For approximately two months, Ampomah noticed a whitish discharge on her Class Five daughter’s underwear while doing laundry, leading her to suspect the child was being sexually abused and withholding information.

Escalating Assault: On July 21, 2026, around 3:00 AM, Ampomah woke the child to demand answers. Unconvinced by the young girl’s denials, Ampomah allegedly beat her first with a cane, then with a metal pot-handling tool (banku grip), and finally attacked her with a cutlass.

Severe Injuries: The child suffered deep slash wounds to her head, hand, and finger. At around 4:00 AM, Ampomah reportedly forced her out of the house.
Medical Care and Legal Action
After being driven from her home, the injured girl sought help from her school proprietress, who immediately alerted Gilbert Takyi, a nurse at St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu.
Takyi rushed the child to the hospital for urgent medical care and notified the Central North Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.
Following a police medical examination confirming the extent of her injuries, Ampomah was arrested and officially charged with causing harm. She remains in police custody pending her psychological evaluation and September court appearance.
