The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has urged parents, candidates, and all education stakeholders to remain calm following the release of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results.
GNAT emphasized the importance of addressing any concerns through official channels, encouraging individuals with grievances to submit formal petitions to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) instead of engaging in public speculation or making unverified claims.
The association also called on WAEC to provide a detailed explanation of the processes involved in determining the results, with the aim of enhancing public confidence and understanding. “To better understand the results, WAEC should clarify the procedures they followed in arriving at this year’s conclusions,” GNAT stated.
Furthermore, GNAT warned against putting excessive pressure on students, cautioning that framing examinations as a life-or-death matter could have serious emotional and psychological repercussions. “Examinations are increasingly being treated as a do-or-die situation, which can lead to students experiencing anxiety, health issues, or even contemplating suicide if not properly managed,” the union remarked.
The association appealed to parents, commentators, and education stakeholders to exercise restraint in their reactions when results are released, stressing that children are highly susceptible to the emotions displayed by adults. “Let us be measured in our responses, as children often internalize the emotions of those around them,” GNAT advised.
