Mahama, Bawumia Back Peaceful Transition as Regent of Dagbon Pledges to Preserve Late Yaa Naa’s Legacy

President John Dramani Mahama and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia have joined traditional leaders and the people of Dagbon in reaffirming their commitment to peace and stability following the enskinment of Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu Mahama as Regent of Dagbon.
The new Regent was enskinned at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Friday, 31st July 2026, following the passing of the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari II.
President Mahama, in his address at the ceremony, paid glowing tribute to the late Yaa Naa, describing the prevailing peace and unity in Dagbon as one of his greatest achievements.
According to the President, the late King’s dedication to reconciliation and stability helped transform Dagbon into a symbol of peaceful coexistence and progress.
He noted that, unlike previous periods when the passing of a Yaa Naa was accompanied by uncertainty and tension, the peaceful funeral rites and smooth transition demonstrated the significant strides made by Dagbon in preserving harmony.
President Mahama congratulated Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu Mahama and praised his commitment to protecting Dagbon’s customs and traditions. He expressed confidence that the traditional processes for selecting the next Yaa Naa would be respected.
He further assured the Regent of government’s support and disclosed that the National Security Council Secretariat had been tasked to monitor the transition process while ensuring the completion of the new Gbewaa Palace project before the installation of a new Yaa Naa.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia described the death of Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari II as a significant loss to both Dagbon and Ghana.
The former Vice President said he shared a long-standing relationship with the late overlord, whom he described as a father figure who treated people with fairness and respect regardless of their political affiliations.
Dr. Bawumia prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the late Yaa Naa and commended the new Regent for pledging to follow the established traditional procedures in the selection of the next overlord.
In his first remarks as Regent, Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu Mahama pledged to uphold the legacy of his late father by promoting peace, unity, and development throughout Dagbon.
He expressed appreciation to the people of Dagbon, Ghanaians, and well-wishers across the world for their prayers and support during the period of mourning.
The Regent assured the people of his dedication to serving with humility and called on all Dagombas to remain united in protecting the peace and stability of the kingdom.
He stressed that peace and unity remain essential foundations for sustainable development and progress.
