Police Investigate Officer Accused of Pulling Gun During Kumasi Towing Dispute

The Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into an incident involving a police officer who allegedly threatened personnel of a towing company with a firearm during a dispute over a wrongly parked vehicle in Kumasi.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) referred the matter to the Police after a video of the confrontation went viral on social media.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, the Assembly said the incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, at Roman Hill in Kumasi’s Central Business District.

According to the KMA, personnel of Day and Night Towing Service, a company contracted by the Assembly, had clamped a saloon car parked at an unauthorised location and were preparing to tow it when a uniformed police officer identified as Y.E. Aboagye arrived and claimed ownership of the vehicle.

The Assembly said the officer challenged the authority of the towing team to remove the vehicle, resulting in a heated exchange between both parties.

It alleged that during the confrontation, the officer threatened to shoot one of the towing personnel in the foot if they continued with the towing exercise.

The KMA described the incident as “unfortunate and highly avoidable” and said it had officially reported the matter to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.

The Assembly also clarified that the incident did not involve its Security Taskforce and urged the public to disregard claims circulating on social media linking the video to the KMA Security Taskforce.

“The public is therefore urged to disregard any false information linking the said video to the KMA Security Taskforce,” the statement said.
