State Owns Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, Lands Minister Confirms
Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah settles ownership debates in Parliament, confirming the 63-acre Accra park remains state property under a 1959 allocation.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has officially confirmed that the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra is fully state-owned property.
The confirmation was delivered on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday in response to an urgent inquiry filed by Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, who sought official clarity regarding the true ownership of the prime capital site.
“Mr. Speaker, the search at the Lands Commission indicates that the site, covering approximately 63 acres situated at Accra, is covered by a Certificate of Allocation dated 13th November 1959 in the name of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Housing, Horticultural Division, for Republic Parks and Children’s Playgrounds,” Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah stated. “Therefore, the land belongs to the state.”
Named after the iconic Ghanaian playwright and children’s rights advocate, the 63-acre green space has been the focus of public anxiety and media debate in recent years due to heightened development pressures and fears of private encroachment.
The Minister’s statement provides definitive legal confirmation, putting to rest long-standing disputes over the ownership of the historic public facility.
