(VIDEO) Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu Calls for Restoration of Dagbon Rotational Succession Following Death of Ya-Na
Haruna Iddrisu urges strict adherence to the Abudu-Andani rotational succession model as Parliament pays tribute to the late Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has called for the formal re-establishment of a rotational succession roadmap between the Abudu and Andani royal gates in Dagbon, following the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II.
Addressing Parliament, Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that the passing of the late King should serve as a pivotal moment to solidify the peace accords that restored long-term stability to the Dagbon Kingdom.
“The passing of Ndanyana Abukari Mahama II should be an opportunity for the restoration of an enduring legacy of a road map of a rotation of the succeeding gateskins between Abudus and Andanis to work to perfection,” Iddrisu stated.
Honoring a Legacy of Unity and Peace
Paying tribute to the late Overlord, who passed away at age 88, Mr. Iddrisu praised his humility, wisdom, and consultative approach to governance. He noted that the King’s reign marked a turning point in healing the deep-seated chieftaincy divisions that followed the tragic events of March 2002.
The Minister also commended the pivotal peacebuilding efforts of key national figures, including the Committee of Eminent Chiefs chaired by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as well as former Presidents John Dramani Mahama and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Call to Rename Tamale Teaching Hospital
Joining the parliamentary tributes, the Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, urged the government to immortalize the late Overlord by renaming the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) in his honor.
Mr. Tampuli praised the historical contributions of the Committee of Eminent Chiefs—including the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Yagbonwura of the Gonja Kingdom—in guiding Dagbon toward enduring reconciliation and peace.
