U.S. Embassy Accra Announces Temporary Suspension of Routine Visa Services
Embassy says July 20–31 suspension is to allow for planned maintenance and system upgrades, not security concerns or policy changes.

- Routine U.S. Embassy consular services in Accra will be suspended from July 20 to 31
- The suspension is to allow for maintenance and system upgrades
- Emergency services and urgent visa cases will continue during the period
The United States Embassy in Accra has announced a temporary suspension of most routine consular services from July 20 to July 31, 2026, to allow for scheduled maintenance and system upgrades.
The suspension will affect routine visa interviews and several non-emergency consular services during the period.
According to the embassy, the temporary disruption forms part of planned operational improvements aimed at modernising its facilities, upgrading systems, and enhancing service delivery.
Officials clarified that the decision is not linked to any security concerns or changes in U.S. immigration or visa policies, but rather to essential maintenance activities.
Despite the suspension of routine services, the embassy said emergency consular assistance for U.S. citizens will continue throughout the period.
It added that urgent visa cases will still be considered for applicants who meet the requirements for emergency appointments.
Individuals with genuine emergency travel needs have been advised to follow the embassy’s procedures for requesting expedited appointments.
Applicants who already have visa interviews or other consular appointments scheduled between July 20 and July 31 have been encouraged to regularly check their emails for further instructions on possible changes or rescheduling.
The embassy said updates regarding affected appointments will be communicated directly to applicants, while the public is encouraged to monitor its official communication channels for additional information.
Normal routine consular operations are expected to resume on August 3, 2026, after the completion of the maintenance work.
The embassy expressed confidence that the upgrades would improve the efficiency and quality of services provided to the public, while apologising for any inconvenience the temporary suspension may cause.
Travellers and visa applicants have been advised to plan ahead and consider the temporary interruption when making arrangements for visa applications, document requests, and international travel.
