KMA Begins Demolition at Santasi Roundabout for Asokwa–Patasi Dual Carriageway Project; Mayor Warns Residents to Evacuate

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has commenced a demolition exercise at the Santasi Roundabout as part of efforts to pave the way for the construction of the Asokwa Interchange–Patasi dual carriageway project.
The exercise, which began on June 15, 2026, is being led by the KMA Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, as part of ongoing infrastructure development aimed at improving road connectivity within the Kumasi metropolis.
According to the Mayor, the demolition exercise is expected to last for two weeks.
He explained that residents and traders living along the roadside from Patasi through to the Asokwa Interchange had already been issued prior notices to vacate the area to allow the project to proceed without obstruction.
In an interview with Lawson Media Online, Mayor Boadi stressed that the Assembly would not tolerate any resistance that could delay the development agenda, warning that all affected persons must comply with evacuation directives.
“I will not allow anyone at Santasi Roundabout to prevent Kumasi’s development. When it gets to your turn, you will be evacuated. No one will be spared. If you are entitled to compensation, you will be compensated,” he stated.
He further indicated that, in line with directives attributed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, displaced traders would be relocated to designated parks and gardens to continue their businesses.
However, the demolition exercise has sparked frustration among traders at the Santasi Roundabout, who say they were not adequately consulted about the relocation arrangements. Some expressed concern over the proposed relocation site, questioning its suitability and ownership.
The affected traders have appealed to authorities, including President John Dramani Mahama and the Asantehene, to intervene and ensure a fair resolution to the matter as the project progresses.
