The Northern Regional Police Command has apprehended 77 individuals during a special anti-drug operation in Tamale and Savelugu.

The operation, carried out by the Special Operations Team “Red Maria,” involved 33 personnel and took place on Monday, March 23, 2026, at around 9:30 p.m.

The exercise is part of the Ghana Police Service’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activities in the region.

Police reported that the operation focused on several known drug hotspots, starting in Lamashegu, where one suspect was arrested. Officers then moved to the Aboabo Market, apprehending another suspect in possession of a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine.

Further intelligence led the team to NOBISCO, where an alleged supplier was detained, though a search of his residence did not uncover any incriminating evidence.

The operation extended to Savelugu, where a major raid at a known drug peddling location resulted in 74 more arrests.

Authorities seized several items, including seven motorbikes, a Toyota Camry, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and 10 sachets of Tramadol.

All 77 suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations. Those found culpable will face court proceedings.

The Northern Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to tackling drug-related crimes and safeguarding public safety, while urging the public to provide timely and credible information to aid law enforcement efforts.
