At least 16 people are feared dead following a devastating head-on crash between an ambulance and a Ford Transit bus at Potrikrom in the Ahafo Ano South-East District of the Ashanti Region.

Eyewitnesses report that the Ford Transit, registration GT 6576–19, was traveling from Kumasi to Bechem when it collided with an ambulance, registration GV 527–23, coming from the opposite direction.

According to Sup. Andrews Kofi Okonenge, Mankranso District Police Commander, in an interview on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV, three children were among the victims. He revealed that the ambulance was reportedly attempting to overtake another vehicle when the crash occurred.

The collision, believed to have been caused by excessive speed, left both vehicles mangled beyond recognition. Most passengers aboard the Ford Transit are thought to have died instantly.

Eyewitness Kwabena Stephen, described the scene as “horrifying,” noting that several bodies were severely dismembered and had to be placed in polythene bags and sacks. “Only one passenger in the Ford Transit survived. Sixteen people died. Officers from the MTTD at Mankranso transported the bodies to the mortuaries at Mankranso and Adugyama,” he said.

Other witnesses alleged that the ambulance, believed to belong to St. Mary’s Catholic Hospital in Drobo, was overtaking another vehicle when the collision occurred.

The Potrikrom community is in shock and mourning as police clear the scene and manage traffic congestion.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the tragic accident.
