A gas tanker with registration number GT 5560-16 has fatally crushed a 54-year-old “wele” seller at Kaase in the Ashanti Region.

The deceased, identified as Owusu and popularly known as “Wayomi,” reportedly lost his life after the tanker experienced brake failure while descending a hill towards Kuwait.

According to reports, the vehicle began rolling backwards uncontrollably, colliding with cars lined up on the road.

At the time of the incident, about five vehicles were stationary, including the gas tanker, a trotro, a Toyota Vitz, and two additional trotro vehicles. Mr. Owusu was seated in the front of one of the trotros directly behind the tanker. A nurse driving her mother in a Toyota Vitz was positioned behind the trotro.

The runaway tanker rammed into both the trotro and the Toyota Vitz. Mr. Owusu reportedly attempted to escape but became trapped beneath the tanker and died instantly. He is believed to have been between 54 and 55 years old and is said to have been married with three children.

A colleague described him as tall, hardworking, and well respected.

His body has been deposited at the morgue of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The crash caused heavy traffic congestion in the area. Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service responded to the scene, working with other security agencies to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow.
