Akwasi Nti, a political aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s 2024 Vice-Presidential candidate, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has cautioned the party’s newly elected flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, against replacing him as running mate for the 2028 general elections.

The former NPP Constituency Chairman for Fomena insisted that Dr. Bawumia should retain Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, to maintain party unity.

He warned that any attempt to substitute NAPO with another candidate could trigger strong opposition from sections of the party’s support base.

“Let Bawumia dare change NAPO, and he will see. We will never allow Bawumia to change NAPO,” Mr. Nti declared during the interview.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia himself previously benefited from continuity, having served multiple times as a running mate, and should therefore extend the same opportunity to Dr. Opoku Prempeh.

Dr. Bawumia has yet to name his running mate for the 2028 elections. However, party insiders suggest that discussions are ongoing regarding possible rebranding efforts and strategic adjustments, including considerations surrounding the vice-presidential slot.
