A violent clash in Abunyanya, a farming community in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region, on Sunday, February 1, 2026, has left two people dead and several others injured.

Mr. Alhassan Abubakar, Assembly Member for the Abunyanya Electoral Area and Presiding Member of the Nkwanta North District Assembly, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the incident arose from a long-standing land and chieftaincy dispute.

He explained that the confrontation began when a man from Abunyanya No.1 started developing a parcel of disputed land. Residents from Abunyanya No.2 attempted to stop him, leading to violent clashes that included gunfire. The conflict resulted in the destruction of houses, shops, and motorbikes.

“The District Security Committee (DISEC) quickly intervened and summoned community leaders to mediate. However, the individual continued with his project, ignoring advice, which escalated tensions,” Mr. Abubakar said.

Military personnel later intervened to restore calm. In response, Oti Regional Minister John Kwadwo Gyapong has deployed additional security forces to Abunyanya and surrounding areas to maintain order and prevent further violence.
