New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has described the provisional outcome of the party’s flagbearer race as disappointing, while urging party faithful to close ranks and move forward in unity.
Provisional figures from the presidential primary place former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the lead with over 55 percent of the votes, with Mr. Agyepong trailing alongside Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
Speaking on Saturday, January 31, as results from various constituencies continued to come in, Mr. Agyepong acknowledged the outcome and commended the commitment of his campaign team despite the setback.
“I would say the results are very disappointing, but it is politics. I take pride in your dedication, your efforts, and your commitment to this strategy,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of unity and mutual respect within the party, noting that the collective decision of party members must be accepted in good faith.
“I am comfortable that, at the end of the day, the majority of the party has made a decision. It is now time for us to work in harmony, respect one another, and present the best version of ourselves to the Ghanaian people to earn their trust and respect,” he added.
Mr. Agyepong further revealed that the bulk of the results had already been received and confirmed that he had personally reached out to congratulate the leading candidate.
“We’ve received most of the results of this election. I have just called Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to congratulate him on the victory, and we are awaiting the official statement from the Electoral Commission,” he stated.
