Several suspects have been remanded into custody following a violent clash between rival youth groups at Sankor, a suburb of Winneba in the Central Region, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed.

The incident occurred on Sunday, after an earlier confrontation between the two factions was reported to police.

Despite initial interventions, tensions escalated, culminating in a violent clash where members reportedly used offensive weapons and fired gunshots, sparking fear among residents.

Unverified reports circulating in the community and on social media suggested that the clash had claimed at least one life.

However, Winneba Divisional Commander ACP Ibrahim Opoku has denied these claims, confirming that no deaths occurred.

He explained that two individuals sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, under police protection.

“We have made some arrests, and the suspects have been remanded into prison custody. There has been no death, as reported. Some persons were wounded, and they are responding to treatment at various hospitals,” ACP Opoku said.

Calm has reportedly been restored to the area, with police maintaining a strong presence to prevent further escalation.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the clash, and efforts are being made to apprehend other suspects involved.

The Police Service has urged residents, particularly the youth, to remain calm and cooperate with authorities, warning that anyone found culpable will face legal consequences.
