Story Highlights
  • Mobile money transactions peaked at a record GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, driven by festive season spending and wider digital adoption
  • Active mobile money accounts rose to 26.7 million
  • Traditional payment methods lagged behind, as cheques and other electronic channels recorded significantly lower transaction values than mobile money

Mobile money (MoMo) transactions in Ghana climbed to a record GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, marking the highest monthly value recorded for the year, according to the Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Economic and Financial Data.

The sharp rise was driven largely by heightened consumer spending during the festive season and the continued expansion of digital payment usage across the country. Transaction volumes reached 982 million in December, up from 892 million in November, reflecting both increased spending and broader adoption of mobile-based payment platforms.

Active mobile money accounts rose significantly to 26.7 million, compared with 25.5 million the previous month, while registered accounts increased to 80.5 million, underscoring sustained progress in financial inclusion.

The mobile money agent network also expanded, ending the year with 491,000 active agents, further strengthening nationwide access to digital financial services.

Balances held in mobile money wallets surged to GH¢39.6 billion, the highest level recorded in 2025, signalling growing confidence in mobile wallets as a store of value and improved liquidity within the digital payments ecosystem.

Interoperable mobile money transactions also recorded gains, with values rising to GH¢5.8 billion in December, up from GH¢4.9 billion in November, supported by increased cross-network transfers during the holiday period.

Meanwhile, traditional payment channels continued to lag behind. Cheque transactions totalled GH¢37.3 billion in December, far below mobile money values, while electronic payment platforms such as GhIPSS Instant Pay recorded GH¢73.3 billion in transaction value.

Overall, the data reinforces mobile money’s dominance as the backbone of Ghana’s retail payments system, with festive spending, rising smartphone penetration and continued agent network expansion expected to sustain growth into 2026.
