TikTok apologises after widespread outages reported by US users

TikTok apologises as US users face widespread glitches and app outages

Story Highlights
  • Over 600,000 reports of issues from US TikTok users, including repeated videos, missing content, and zero-view posts
  • Outages linked to a power failure at a US data centre managed with TikTok’s new owner, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC
  • CapCut, TikTok’s video editing app, also affected, while company works with Oracle to stabilise services

TikTok’s new US owner has apologised to users after thousands reported glitches affecting the popular video-sharing platform over the weekend.

Platform outage monitor Downdetector recorded more than 600,000 reports from US users, citing issues such as videos repeatedly appearing on “For You” feeds, some content not displaying, and new posts registering “zero views.” Some users continued to experience problems into Monday.

TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, which now manages TikTok’s operations in the US, said the disruptions were caused by a power outage at a US data centre that also impacted other apps under its management.

“We’re working with our data centre partner to stabilise our service. We’re sorry for this disruption and hope to resolve it soon,” the company said in a post on social media platform X.

Oracle, TikTok’s US data centre partner, declined to comment. The cloud computing firm recently took on a larger role in TikTok’s American operations under a deal finalised last Thursday, which secures the app’s future in the US.

The outages prompted speculation that the issues could be linked to the platform’s new ownership or potential changes to the app’s algorithm.

Downdetector reported 663,061 complaints from US users between Saturday evening and Monday, with some describing a “total outage.” Reports briefly dropped overnight on Sunday but rose again on Monday as users continued to face problems.

CapCut, TikTok’s video editing app, also saw thousands of problem reports from users during the same period.
