Ruling party banks on grassroots experience ahead of March 3 poll

- NPP selects Baba Ali as its candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election
- Party leadership cites experience, humility and grassroots appeal
- NDC prepares for its own primary with six aspirants in the race
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has selected Baba Ali as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election, as the party moves to intensify its campaign in the constituency.
Greater Accra Regional Chairman Divine Agorhom said the choice followed broad consultations within the party. He explained that Baba Ali was selected based on his experience, humility and ability to mobilise grassroots support within the short campaign period.
According to Mr Agorhom, the NPP deliberately opted for a candidate deeply familiar with the party’s internal structures and capable of working closely with members at all levels to energise supporters on the ground.
“We want somebody with strong party experience, who understands our structures, is well known within the party, and has the humility and willingness to go door-to-door and engage everyone so that, within this short period, we can work together to make him acceptable to the constituency,” he said.
He added that after extensive deliberations, party leaders were confident Baba Ali best met these criteria and positioned the NPP strongly ahead of the poll.
Mr Agorhom also noted that Baba Ali has served twice as constituency secretary and enjoys the full support of the local party leadership, which he described as central to the party’s by-election strategy.
Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to hold its own primary ahead of the March 3 by-election. Six aspirants have picked nomination forms, including constituency chairman Mohammed Ramme, Hajia Amina Adam, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria Baba Jamal, and Dr Yakubu Azindow.
