The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has foiled a planned armed robbery on the Antoakrom–Manso Nkwanta stretch following intelligence about suspected criminal activity in the area.

According to the Police Command, officers received information on December 31 that a group of suspected robbers had assembled in a nearby bush with the intention of attacking commuters. A rapid response team was immediately deployed to the location.

On arrival, police encountered four armed suspects. The suspects reportedly opened fire upon seeing the officers and attempted to escape. Police returned fire, during which two of the suspects—identified as Usmaro Mohammed and Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Yaw—were injured. They were later pronounced dead on arrival at the Bekwai Municipal Hospital. Two other suspects fled into the bush and remain at large.

A search of the area led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, a pump-action gun with four BB cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a black bag containing 16 live cartridges.

Police also impounded a Toyota Voxy vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects in their operations.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the Police Command indicated that the suspects are believed to be linked to several robbery incidents in Manso and Obuasi, including the Mpohor gold robbery, the Nyinahini highway robbery, and a cocoa shed robbery at Sefwi.

Preliminary investigations suggest the group may have accomplices operating in Mankranso, Tamale, and Brekum. Police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and to establish ownership of the impounded vehicle.

Investigations into the case are continuing.
