The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a stern warning to parents in the Ashanti Region over the dangers of fake and substandard baby diapers circulating in the market.

Authorities say these products pose serious health risks to infants and urged parents to be vigilant when purchasing diapers.

Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tanko on the Lawson TV Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Monday, December 15, 2025, Nathaniel Nana Kwabena Nkrumah, Ashanti Regional Head of the FDA, emphasized that parents should always check packaging, batch numbers, and expiry dates to ensure the diapers are genuine.

He explained that genuine diapers are sold in sealed packs and meet certain quality standards, including thickness and proper labeling.

“If you do not see these features on the packaging, it raises serious concerns about the product,” he said.

Nkrumah clarified that the FDA is not targeting genuine businesses, but warned that anyone dealing in counterfeit products would not be allowed to operate. “The FDA is not here to collapse business, but if you do the bad, you will not be allowed to do business,” he added.

Parents were also advised to avoid buying diapers from street vendors, never recycle used diapers, and ensure they do not leave diapers on babies for too long, as this could affect the child’s health.

The region-wide operation, conducted in collaboration with the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), aims to remove substandard, expired, and counterfeit diapers from the market and ensure the safety of consumers, particularly infants.
