- Early-morning fire razes a boys’ dormitory room at Kadjebi-Asato SHS.
- Firefighters hampered by a non-functional tender, slowing response.
- Several students collapse during the chaos but receive immediate care.
Panic erupted at Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School in the Oti Region on Tuesday morning after a fire swept through one of the boys’ dormitory rooms, causing several students to collapse amid the chaos.
The blaze broke out around 9:00 a.m. on December 2, completely destroying a room in the dormitory block. All belongings in the affected room were lost, and the fire gutted the roofing structure, leaving the space entirely burnt out.
Firefighters responding to the emergency were unable to use the district’s fire tender due to technical challenges. With no functional appliance available, personnel were forced to rely on improvised methods, slowing their efforts and allowing the fire to spread quickly.
The incident triggered widespread fear as students rushed to help evacuate items from nearby rooms. School authorities, supported by community members, intervened swiftly to calm the situation and provide immediate care to the students who collapsed. All affected students have since received medical attention.
