MTN Ghana Champions Environmental Sustainability with Beach Cleanup

MTN Ghana Leads Environmental Initiatives with Beach Cleanup and Sustainability Week Activities

Story Highlights
  • MTN Ghana, with partners, cleaned Sakumono Mighty Beach, collecting and recycling waste.
  • Sustainability Week activities promote environmental awareness and ESG principles.
  • Long-term initiatives include biodegradable SIM cards, renewable energy, and community-focused sustainability projects.

As part of its Sustainability Week celebrations, MTN Ghana partnered with McKingTorch Africa and Buzstop Boys on Thursday to clean up Sakumono Mighty Beach near Junction Mall.

During the two-hour exercise, MTN staff and members of the partner organizations collected and segregated waste—including bottles, footwear, Styrofoam, and fabric—for recycling.

The beach, once a thriving habitat for mangroves, birds, and sea turtles, had been heavily polluted by poorly managed stormwater drainage in the area.

The initiative aims to maintain regular beach cleanups, boosting tourism potential while raising public awareness about environmental sustainability.

MTN Ghana’s Sustainability Week, running until November 17, 2025, underscores the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and aligns with the UN’s 2011 declaration of the “International Year of the Forest” as well as MTN Group’s theme, “Making a Positive Difference to the Environment.”

Beyond the week-long activities, MTN Ghana seeks to embed sustainability into its operations and culture through its Ambition 2025 Strategic Commitment, guided by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

Key initiatives include introducing eco-friendly biodegradable SIM cards, promoting renewable energy like solar power at its headquarters, implementing waste reduction and recycling programs, and supporting Ghana’s sustainable development through digital innovation, financial inclusion, and community engagement.

Sustainability Week also featured interactive sessions such as “Lunch and Learn,” “Eco Talk,” and “Bright Conversations,” designed to promote sustainable practices and environmental awareness across the company and community.
