Heightened security measures are in place at the GCD Walker Park in Akwatia as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) conducts its parliamentary primary today, Monday, August 4, ahead of the by-election scheduled for September 2 in the Eastern Region.
Police officers have been deployed throughout the venue to ensure order and safety as delegates vote to choose from three aspirants: former MP Henry Boakye Yiadom, former Akwatia Presiding Member Erasmus Ali Korney, and Bernard Bediako Baidoo.
While the mood remains tense, the election process is proceeding peacefully, with enthusiastic party supporters filling the grounds.
Speaking to the media, Eastern Regional NDC Chairman Mark-Oliver Kevor expressed optimism, stating that the chosen candidate is expected to reclaim the seat for the NDC in the upcoming by-election.
“This election is ours to win,” Dr. Kevor emphasized. “Once our candidate is selected, victory on September 2 is within reach.”
The by-election comes in the wake of the untimely death of Ernest Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP whose December 2024 election victory was being challenged in court by the NDC.
The declared vacancy has reignited political activity in the constituency, setting the stage for a heated showdown between the NDC and NPP.
