A fierce gunfight at Cantonments in Accra, on the evening of Tuesday, July 15, 2025, left two suspected robbers dead and a police officer critically injured.

The shootout erupted between a police surveillance team and a gang of five heavily armed men believed to have come from Bimbilla in the Northern Region.

The suspects — identified as Mujeeb Omor, Abukari, Akpa, and Yakubu Jengbarigba, alias “Pato,” a dismissed former police officer — were allegedly planning to rob a foreign national. Armed with AK-47s, pump-action guns, and pistols, the gang had lodged in a Labadi hotel while preparing for the operation.

Acting on intelligence, the Police Intelligence Directorate deployed a team led by ASP Richard Beriko and ASP Emmanuel Doe Yevoo to monitor the suspects. Around 8:00 p.m., the robbers left their hotel in a Toyota Yaris. When they detected the surveillance team trailing them, they opened fire, triggering a gun battle.

General Sergeant Samuel Akocha was hit in the leg and armpit during the exchange. Police returned fire, killing two suspects on the spot. The other three fled with their weapons.

Recovered from the scene were two loaded pump-action guns, live cartridges, three iPhones, spiritual rings, and talismans. The deceased were taken to the Police Hospital morgue, while Sgt Akocha remains hospitalized and is responding to treatment.

The police have launched a manhunt for the three fugitives and assured the public of their unwavering resolve to bring them to justice and ensure safety in the capital.
