Reuben Solomon Jabari, a miner and road contractor, has called on the government to shift its focus from seizing excavators to promoting responsible and regulated mining practices as a way to combat illegal mining.
Solomon Jabari criticized the current approach, stating that while the government heavily emphasizes the seizure of excavators, crucial issues such as land reclamation and the proper closure of abandoned mining pits have been neglected—leading to loss of lives and environmental damage.
“The focus is misplaced,” he said. “Reclamation efforts and the proper sealing of pits are being ignored, and people are dying as a result.”
He also raised concerns about the legitimacy of some security taskforces operating in mining areas. “We don’t even know where some of these taskforces come from. Many appear to be fake, and some individuals are taking advantage of the situation to enrich themselves,” he claimed on Lawson TV.
Solomon Jabari urged the government to stop the harassment of miners by security forces and instead invest in educating miners on legal and sustainable mining practices.
“We need proper education on mining activities,” he said. “Let’s allow the system to function effectively rather than relying on intimidation.”
