- Family mourns Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi, describing him as their pillar
- Loved ones say he was full of life just days before his sudden death
- His passing has left the household in deep shock and sorrow
The sudden demise of Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, has plunged his family, constituents, and the political fraternity into mourning.
Speaking to Lawson TV this morning, 8/07/2025 — a day after his death — the grieving family described the late MP as the “pillar of the family,” expressing shock over his sudden passing.
“We didn’t expect this. Ernest was strong and full of life just days ago. He was the strength and light of this family,” one family spokesperson said, struggling to hold back tears.
Another family member added, “The house feels empty. His laughter, his generosity — we’ll never forget. The pillar of the home is gone.”
Ernest Kumi, a first-time lawmaker elected on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had recently been at the center of national attention due to a legal battle over the legitimacy of his parliamentary seat. In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found him guilty of contempt for defying an interim injunction against his swearing-in. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
However, just weeks ago, the Supreme Court overturned that ruling, clearing his name and paving the way for his full return to parliamentary duties.
Mr. Kumi was seen in Parliament the previous week, making news of his passing even more startling.
His death is a significant loss to the NPP and Parliament, where he was beginning to make his mark as a vocal and committed legislator.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, as the family calls for prayers and privacy during this difficult time.
