  • His legal team argues the bail is excessive and restricts his release
  • Attempts by NPP leaders to visit him at the NIB headquarters were unsuccessful

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has approached the High Court in Accra seeking a review of the bail terms set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Filed on May 30, 2025, by his legal representatives, Marfo & Associates, the application argues that the GHS 50 million bail condition is excessively harsh and effectively designed to hinder his release.

The motion is backed by an affidavit detailing the basis for the request.

The High Court is scheduled to hear the case on June 3, 2025, at 9:00 am, where Wontumi’s legal team will push for a reduction or modification of the existing bail requirements.

In a related development, key NPP figures including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin were unsuccessful in their efforts to visit Wontumi at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra.

Though permitted entry to the Ridge premises on Friday, May 30, the delegation left without seeing him, confirming that access had been denied.

Wontumi had earlier been transferred to the NIB following his arrest and detention by EOCO amid ongoing criminal investigations.
