The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has revealed that authorities have identified 21 individuals connected to violent incidents during Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 elections, which claimed 15 lives and left 40 people injured.
Of the suspects, four are currently out on bail, five remain in remand, and the remainder have outstanding arrest warrants. The incidents spanned multiple regions and constituencies.
During the 2020 elections, fatalities occurred in Bono East (Techiman South), Greater Accra (Odododiodio and Ablekuma Central), Bono (Banda and Dormaa West), and the Northern Region (Savelugu), with injuries in these areas ranging from one to 15 per incident.
For the 2024 elections, deaths were reported in Central Region (Awutu Senya East), Northern Region (Tolon), Savannah Region (Damango), Bono East (Nkoranza South), and Ashanti Region (Offinso North and Ahafo Ano South-West), with a total of six people injured.
Minister Muntaka affirmed that security agencies are determined to ensure all suspects face justice and stressed that preventive measures are being strengthened to avert election-related violence in future polls.
