At least 18 people have died and more than 30 are missing following a landslide in the village of Burutsi, located in North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Local authorities said the disaster was triggered by several hours of torrential rain, which caused mud and rocks to tumble down the hills, destroying homes and blocking the main road connecting Goma, the region’s largest city, to the provincial capital, Walikale.

Officials have requested government assistance, but rescue and relief efforts have been hampered by the road closures and difficult terrain. Search teams are struggling to reach affected areas to locate survivors, as debris continues to obstruct access.

The situation remains critical, with authorities warning that numbers could rise as more people are accounted for.
