A High Court in Minna has sentenced 16-year-old Joy Afekafe to life imprisonment for her involvement in the armed robbery and gruesome murder of Dr. Funmilayo Sherifat Adefolalu, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology (FUT).

Joy, who was 14 at the time of the crime, had been employed as a housemaid by the victim before being dismissed for stealing.

She later conspired with two accomplices—DJ Wallex and DJ Smart—to carry out the fatal attack at the lecturer’s Gbaiko residence in October 2023.

Her detailed confession, combined with court testimony, helped the prosecution prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

Though eligible for the death penalty due to the nature of the crime, Joy received a life sentence, as Nigerian law forbids capital punishment for minors. Her co-conspirators remain at large.
